Description

Bessel van der Kolk observes, “…almost all mental suffering involves either trouble in creating workable and satisfying relationships or difficulties in regulating arousal”. These same dynamics that impede clients’ functioning outside of sessions often confound therapeutic interactions or relationships as well. The first seminar of this two course sequence equips therapists to help clients work towards internalizing an “earned secure attachment,” integrating greater coherence of self, and improving functioning in their intimate relationships.

Making Connections is a ten module seminar that elucidates how secure attachment during early childhood lays the foundation for the capacities for constructive interpersonal engagement and affect regulation. The same process of “good enough” attunement and resonance contributes to the alliance at the core of psychotherapeutic healing. Moreover, psychotherapy often provides the opportunity to coach clients to seek more secure attachments with loved ones (partners, parents, siblings or children) or internally as they integrate disparate parts of self. Learning will incorporate theory (derived from psychodynamic, family systems, developmental and somatic approaches), experiential exercises and case consultation.
